Marrakech – The second day of the third World Power-to-X Summit (PTX23), which opened in Marrakech on September 19, bringing together a diverse audience of policymakers, industry leaders, research experts, and global innovators.

Jointly organized by the Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), the GreenH2 Cluster, and the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, in collaboration with the Regional Council of Guelmim Oued Noun and Industrie du Maroc Magazine, PTX23 aims to explore the transformative potential of green hydrogen and clean molecules in addressing climate chnge and fostering international cooperation in the field of energy efficiency.

Green Hydrogen as a Path to Address Climate Change and Technological Sovereignty

Speaking at the event, Mohammed Yahya Zniber, President of the GreenH2 Cluster, emphasized that the transition to a green hydrogen-based economy presents a unique opportunity to combat climate change and address migration challenges.

Zniber stressed the importance of implementing industrial strategies, ensuring technological sovereignty, and promoting international cooperation in the field of green hydrogen and its derivatives, especially methanol, for industrial production.

Morocco’s Growing Potential in Green Hydrogen and Clean Molecules

Samir Rachidi, Director General of IRESEN, highlighted the remarkable progress in Morocco’s automotive and aeronautical industries. He also pointed out the significance of the Green Ammonia Pilot plant (GAPP) project, dedicated to innovation and green hydrogen applications, in bolsteringMorocco’s potential in the green energy sector.

Rachidi noted that King Mohammed VI’s visionary leadership has played a pivotal role in advancing renewable energies in Morocco and positioning the country as a hub for carbon-neutral industrial ecosystems.

Moving beyond fossil fuels to a sustainable future

Hicham El Habti, President of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, called for a departure from fossil fuel sources to combat global environmental challenges. He stressed the importance of ensuring access to energy for all nations and stabilizing the global energy market.

Decarbonizing Industries to Address the Climate Emergency

Chakib Alj, President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), emphasized the urgency of decarbonizing industries to address the climate emergency.

He highlighted green hydrogen as a promising carbon-free resource that could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provided that the cost gap between green hydrogen and fossil fuel is narrowed and international collaboration is strengthened.

Regions as Catalysts for Green and Resilient Economies

Mbarka Bouaida, President of the Regional Council of Guelmim-Oued Noun, underscored the vital role regions play in driving economic growth, technological advancement, and innovation. She emphasized that regions are not only attractive investment destinations but also essential actors in the success of sustainable development projects.

PTX23: Unleashing Green Hydrogen and Clean Molecules

Held this year under the theme “Unleashing Green Hydrogen and Clean Molecules for a Carbon-Free Future,” the World Power-to-X Summit serves as a prominent platform for regional and international dialogue on the industrial, logistical, and technological aspects of green hydrogen and its applications.

Against the backdrop of a global energy crisis and shifting geopolitical dynamics, PTX23 has gained particular significance, aligning with Morocco’s commitment to becoming a regional leder and African hub in hydrogen production and technology through the “Morocco Offer” initiative.

As PTX23 continues, the summit’s participants and organizers expect their discussions and collaborations will pave the way for innovative solutions to global energy challenges and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable and carbon-free future.
