Kilkenny was well represented at the recent Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) National Biochar and Carbon Products Conference at the Landmark Hotel in Carrick on Shannon, County Leitrim.
Biochar is a stable form of charcoal, produced from a wide variety of biomass streams using pyrolysis technology. It is increasingly recognised for the important role it can play in environmental or agricultural applications, to be utilised as an effective carbon sequestration method and in its ability to decarbonise heating requirements.

This conference was organised under the auspices of the Interreg Northwest Europe funded THREE C Project – Creating and sustaining Charcoal value chains to promote a Circular Carbon economy in NWE Europe. The conference highlighted Irish stakeholders who are currently working in the biochar and carbon products sector and partners from across Europe in the THREE C project who had interesting stories, products ad developments to share.
The conference, organised by the Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) was sponsored by Celignis Analytical and Arigna Fuels. With over 122 delegates in attendance, representing a cross section of stakeholders and businesses from this emerging sector.
The event brought together experts, innovators, and entrepreneurs to discuss the potential of biochar and the development of carbon products. Attendees heard from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Colm Markey MEP for Midlands North West, who gave the keynote address and outlined the important potential contribution of biochar and carbon farming from a European policy perspective. IrBEA are thankful to all the speakers and attendees who came from across Europe and Ireland to share their knowledge and insights on the day.
