German energy group Uniper SE (ETR:UN01) will source green ammonia from a First Ammonia project in Texas which is planned to begin operation in 2026 with an initial capacity of 100 MW.
The collaboration between the two companies was announced at the US-German Hydrogen Conference in Berlin, according to a joint statement released on Tuesday.

First Ammonia’s plant in Port of Victoria will consist of 100-MW modules, utilising solid-oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology from Danish manufacturer Topsoe. Each of the modules will be capable of producing up to 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.
Uniper will offtake the output of the plant in Texas to support the decarbonisation of its customers who will be transitioning from grey ammonia to green ammonia.
After the commissioning of the initial 100 MW, the capacity of the site will be rapidly expanded to cater to Uniper’s industrial and global customers inthe subsequent phase.
Following the signing of the deal, Uniper’s chief commercial officer Carsten Poppinga noted: “Our focus on greener gases will allow Uniper’s customers to switch from carbon-intensive ammonia to green and blue ammonia and thus avoiding a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions. […] With our pioneering project development, our near-term goal is to become a supplier of choice for the industries using ammonia as a feedstock.”
