DURING his 46-day stint as “balik-scientist” at the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Sergio Capareda, professor of Texas A&M University in the United States, developed work that helped boost the biomass renewable energy (RE) production of the Ilocos Norte-based MMSU.

Capareda took part in crafting MMSU’s research proposals for funding such as waste-to-energy conversion systems via pyrolysis; rehabilitation of the university anaerobic digester; water harvesting concept; renewable energy science and technology park; green climate fund concept; and smart campus, city and transport.

MMSU President Shirley Agrupis acknowledged the visiting professor as “a treasured part of the MMSU community because he has hlped us craft our framework on the Balik-Scientist Program, which now makes the university a haven of visiting experts.”

Daniel Tapaon Jr., MMSU information officer, said Capareda helped the university develop alternative uses of bioethanol wastes to pave the way for conducting possible projects on animal feed, mushroom cultivation and more ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass.

He said the balik-scientist also assisted MMSU in reviving its anaerobic digestion system for improved biomass production and provided technical guidance to improve the university’s downdraft gasifier and crafted a comprehensive program for waster conversion into fuel, power and biochar materials.
