Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced its intention to partner with German companies to produce clean ammonia with the lowest possible carbon footprint. The aim is to produce ammonia with a zero carbon footprint, which will help reduce industrial carbon dioxide emissions in Germany and improve air quality.

ADNOC announced a partnership with the German state government of North Rhine-Westphalia and industry to develop a low-carbon value chain for the ammonia industry. The collaboration aims to improve the sustainability of ammonia production globally by reducing environmental impact.

The announcement comes after the government of North Rhine-Westphalia, ADNOC and GMBH & Co Corenta signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a strategic partnership at the Chempark chemical complex.

This partnership will allow ADNOC to make investments in the chemical complex, taking advantage of Centa’s facilities to expand its business in the chemical sector. The memorandum also provides for the exchange of knowledge, experience and technologies between Corenta and ADNOC to enhance the competitiveness of both companies. This partnership will allow ADNOC to expand its presence in the European chemicals market and contribute to the creation of a sustainable chemical economy in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Ammonia is a low-carbon fuel used for various industrial applications, such as transport, power generation and the production of steel, cement and fertilisers. Mona Neubauer, deputy prime minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, pointed to the need to expand renewable energy generation and produce other materials that transport climate-neutral energy, such as green hydrogen.

Neubauer pointed out that large amounts of green energy imports are necessary to meet existing needs and to achieve climate protection goals. He said that work is underway to conclude partnerships and create an mort infrastructure to supply the industrial sector.

In addition, ADNOC is increasing its ammonia activities to meet growing global demand for its low-emission energy sources. The UAE-based company is cooperating with the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia and Corinta to contribute to emission reductions in the main centre of the German industrial sector. This is achieved through the use of its abundant and competitive energy resources, as well as the adoption of low-emission solutions. In May 2021, the company announced the development of a new global low-emission ammonia production project at the Industrial Chemicals Zone within the integrated industrial system “Taziz” in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. The project will have a production capacity of one million metric tonnes per year and will allow the company to expand its strategic energy partnerships along the hydrogen fuel value chain. Test shipments of low-carbon ammonia hvebeen commissioned to the company’s customers in Germany and Asia to examine its use in various areas.
