In addition to the microwave-assisted pyrolysis on Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean Group is debuting another solid waste to energy system with micro auto gasification on Silver Nova.
The systems convert solid waste into synthesis gas (syngas) that the ships can directly use as energy. An additional bioproduct, biochar, can be used as a soil nutrient.
Seatrade Cruise News earlier reported on the microwave-assisted pyrolysis for Icon of the Seas, a technology developed by Vow ASA’s Scanship.
Reducing food waste
In addition to these technologies, Royal Caribbean Group aims to reduce food waste across the fleet by 50% by 2025, part of its WIN on Waste initiative launched in 2021.
This includes such initiatives as developing a proprietary platform to monitor food supply and accurately estimate how much food should be produced, prepped and ordered on a given day. (Seatrade Cruise Review’s March 2023 issue reported on this system, Q Control, aboard Wonder of the Seas.)
Other initiativs include using artificial intelligence to adjust food production in real time, a dedicated food waste role to monitor and train crew members and a food waste awareness campaign in the crew dining areas fleet wide.
24% reduction so far
To date, Royal Caribbean Group has achieved a 24% reduction in food waste by focusing on the front end of the food system, which prevents and addresses many of the main causes of food waste, including inventory management and over-preparing.
