Egypt is anticipated to become a leading wind energy market owing to a series of GW-scale wind and green hydrogen developments underway.
According to the Global Wind Energy Council’s Global Wind Report 2023, 4.3 GW of new installations are expected to come online by 2026, with an additional 1 GW of capacity added annually after 2027, bringing the total installed capacity to 8 GW by 2030. To put it in perspective, the country’s current installed capacity sits at 1.702 MW showing the scale of projects set to come online.
ACWA Power MoU: 10 GW
In November 2022, power generation developer and investor ACWA Power signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian government for the construction of a 10 GW onshore wind project. The MoU was signed between ACWA and Egypt’s New & Renewable Energy Authority and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. Feasibility studies are currently underway.
Masdar Consortium MoU: 10 GW
November 2022 also saw the signing of MoU between a consortium comprising UAE-based energy company Masdar; Dutch renewable developer Infinity Power; and Hassan Allam Utilities and Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy for the development of a 10 GW onshore wind project. The project represents part of the Green Corridor Initiative – which aims to increase the share of renewables to 42% by 2035 – and is expected to create 100,000 jobs while displacing 23.8 million tons of carbon emissions.
Fortescue Future Industries MoU: 9.2 GW
Green energy project developer Fortescue Future Industries signed a framework agreement for the development of 7.6 GW of wind and solar for the production of green hydrogen in 2022. The projects have the capacity to produce up to 330 kilo-tons of green hydrogen per annum.
Globeleq MoU: 9 GW
On the sidelines of COP 27 in November 2022, independent power producer Globeleq signed a framework agreement with the Egyptian authorities for the construction of a large-scale green hydrogenpoject. Developed in three phases, the project will total 3.6 GW of electrolyzers powered by 9 GW of wind and solar. The start of operations is targeted for 2026-2027.
Masdar Consortium MoU: 2 GW
The Masdar-Infinity-Hassan consortium signed a second MoU with the Egyptian authorities for the construction of a 2 GW green hydrogen project in Egypt, comprising 4 GW of electrolyzers. Located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), the project is scheduled to come online in 2026 and will produce up to 480,000 tons per annum (tpa) of green hydrogen and 2.3 million tpa of green ammonia from wind and solar.
Green Fuel Alliance Consortium MoU: 2 GW
During COP 27, the Green Fuel Alliance – a consortium comprising EDF Renewables and Zero Waste – inked a framework agreement for the development of a green hydrogen mega-project in the SCZone. The project will be based on a mix of 2 GW of wind and solar with the first phase expected to generate 22,000 tpa of green hydrogen. It is scheduled to bcoe operational by 2026.
AMEA Power MoU: 1 GW
On the sidelines of COP 27 in 2022, renewable energy developer AMEA Power announced the signing of a framework agreement with the Egyptian government for the development of a 1 GW green hydrogen project comprising wind and solar. The project will serve as feedstock for the production of 800,000 tpa of green ammonia.
Alfanar MoU: 500,000 tpa and 100,000 tpa
Saudi Arabian energy company Alfanar signed an MoU with Egypt in August 2022 for the development of a $3.5 billion green hydrogen project. Expected to use renewable energy sources including wind, the project will produce 500,000 tpa of green ammonia and 100,000 tpa of green hydrogen.
TotalEnergies MoU: 300,000 tpa
May 2022 saw the signing of an MoU between French energy major TotalEnergies and the Egyptian government for the development of a 300,000 tpa green hydrogen facility. Located in the Sokhna region, the project will utilize 100% renewable resources.
Egypt Green MoU: 260 MW
Egpt Green – a consortium made up of Norway’s Scatec, Abu Dhabi’s Fertiglobe, Egypt’s Orascom and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt – signed an MoU for the development of a green hydrogen project that will produce 15,000 tpa of green hydrogen using a 100 MW electrolyzer to produce 90,000 tpa of green ammonia. The 100 MW project will be powered with 260 MW of wind and solar.
