Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, is keeping a watchful eye on the environmental and infrastructural development projects in the country, specifically the ongoing efforts to clear encroachments and conduct dredging operations in Egypt’s lakes. This initiative forms a crucial part of the nation’s broader sustainability and conservation objectives.
Preserving Natural Resources
The key aim is to safeguard the natural resources of Egypt and ensure the optimal utilization of its water bodies. The clearing of illegal constructions and other forms of encroachments on the lakes is expected to bring back their ecological balance, thereby enhancing their role in the local economy, including agriculture and fisheries.
Navigating Water Management
The dredging activities currently underway are designed to maintain the depth and navigability of the lakes, crucial for transportation and water management. The President’s involvement underlines the government’s commitment to addressing envirnmental challenges and championing sustainable development in Egypt.
Green Initiatives in Focus
In line with Egypt’s Vision 2030, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has also urged the government to begin the execution of green hydrogen projects and establish the required infrastructure. These projects form a critical part of Egypt’s strategy to reduce its dependence on petroleum imports, decrease the cost of hydrogen production, and build national capabilities in the field. The broader aim is to make Egypt one of the leading countries in the low-carbon hydrogen economy globally.
As part of these sustainable initiatives, ACWA Power recently signed an agreement to develop a green ammonia project powered by wind and solar plants. The aim is to work on a larger green hydrogen project in the country.
The SIG Foundation’s project ‘Cartons for Good,’ which combats food loss and malnutrition by preserving surplus food, has also gained international recognition. The foundation plans to invest ina study to maximize the initiative’s impact, especially in Egypt, where a significant percentage of fruit and vegetables are wasted.
At the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP28), CHINT, a smart energy and new energy solutions provider, joined hands with Egypt’s government unit SCZONE for the development of a cleantech industrial park. The partnership aims to promote Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through sustainable energy initiatives.
