A ZAR-47-billion (USD 2.5bn/EUR 2.4bn) South African green hydrogen and ammonia project recently proposed by Phelan Green Energy last month, has been granted the coveted Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) status by the local government.
Independent solar power producer Phelan said on Thursday that the designated status was given in line with South Africa’s efforts to enhance green infrastructure development across the country.

Under the Saldanha Green Hydrogen Project, Phelan intends to build a complex with an annual output of 85,000 tonnes in Saldanha, Western Cape province. The production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives is expected to commence early in 2026. Planning works are already ongoing and should be finalised by the third quarter of 2024, after which an investment decision will be taken, the developer said.
Phelan will install the facility through its subsidiary Solar Capital, expecing to reap over ZAR 6 billion in revenues annually from the exports. According to it, the complex will be South Africa’s largest green hydrogen production site.
