President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that 300,000 acres of government-owned land will be used for large-scale agriculture.
The President also mentioned that land will be allocated for this purpose from the estates owned by the Plantation Corporation and the lands belonging to A, B and other zones.
The President said that they still do not know the amount of land owned by the Land Reform Commission appointed in 1972 and mentioned that he appointed a committee to find the extent of land owned.
The President mentioned this in a meeting held recently at the President’s Office with the heads of media organizations.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe also said:“Our idea is to create a green economy in the country. Green energy can be created. If all the reservoirs and tanks are used, a large part of our production can be exported. Or hydrogen can be applied to green ammonia. Under the Land Development Act, land rights are given to farmers and common people. 50,000 people living in flats willalso be given the ownership to those houses. It can be even more. For the first time, we have accepted the ownership of land to the public. The State Land Act did not give land rights to the common people. Only Shangri-La was granted land rights. “We started Mahaweli to give those lands to the people. But the land in zone C or zone H was not given to the people. Now all these have been given ownership to the public.”
