In the lede and seventh graf of BCN5 from Oct. 25 (BIO FUEL EAST BAY PARK), the word “coal” was incorrectly used. The substance created is biochar, not coal. Please read it:

X X X In a process called pyrolysis, the wood is burned at extremely high temperatures, under a curtain of fanned wind in the absence of oxygen. The charred wood is cooled with water and mechanically crunched into bits of dense porous biochar, about the size of construction gravel.
