Hy2gen Plans to Build Green Ammonia Plant in Mexico

German startup Hy2gen has announced its plans to construct a green ammonia plant in Mexico. The plant, called Marengo, will have a 200MW electrolyser capacity and will be located in the southern state of Campeche, near the border with Guatemala. It is set to be an off-grid facility with an annual production volume of 180,000 tonnes.

This groundbreaking project will mark the first green ammonia plant in Mexico. The local government of Campeche has confirmed that the ammonia produced at the facility will be exported to Germany for use in the fertilizer industry.

To power the operations of the green ammonia plant, Hy2gen will rely on a combination of renewable energy sources. The plant will be powered by 208MW of solar PV and 415MW of onshore wind. The expected start date for operations is in 2027.

Hy2gen has also signed a cooperation agreement for further feasibility studies of the Marengo project, with local representatives present during the signing. The company is dedicated to woring closely with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure the success of the project.

Cyril Dufau-Sansot, the CEO of Hy2gen, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “For Marengo, everyone involved is pulling in the same direction. The cooperation with the local authorities, the governor, and also the preliminary work with (German development agency) GIZ were always characterized by a sustainable pioneering spirit – progressive thinking and action is what it takes to achieve a climate-neutral future.”
