Syed Hussain Naqvi is the Chief Technology Officer at ACME, a renewable energy and green energy developer based in India. He said that the Duqm Project will be among the first green ammonia projects when the initial phase becomes operational within the next coming years.
Naqvi, who recently participated in a webinar by Ammonia Energy Association, an industry grouping that promotes the use of ammonia as a source of sustainable energy, said a special purpose vehicle led by ACME, named ‘Green Hydrogen & Chemicals SPC is developing the facility in Duqm.

The Chief Technology Officer stated that “Our first commercial-scale facility is coming up in Duqm SEZ, where we will be able to produce 1.2 million tons of green ammonia each year. We have therefore acquired approximately 2 square kilometres of land (in Duqm).”

We are certified by TUV Rheinland as a green production facility and have environmental clearances and building permits. We have also placed orders with long-lead items such as the ammonia loop (with the US-based engineering company KBR), the ammonia storing facility (with the German industrial engineering giant ThyssenKrupp) and others.
The official revealed that a total investment of $6 billion was planned for the two-phase development of 1.2 million tonnes of green ammonia per year (mtpa). The site has already been equipped with labour camps, and the first phase of the project will be operational between December 2024 to June 2025.
The project will use solar photovoltaic panels with a peak capacity of 486 MWp to power a 320-MW electrolyser. Hydrogen from the plant will then be sent through the Haber-Bosch circuit and converted into ammonia. The phase 1 production o green ammonia will be around 100,000 tonnes annually. The project also includes a desalination facility with a capacity of 7 million litres per day, a hydrogen storage plant of 60 tonnes, and storage facilities for 30,000 tons of green ammonia.

Naqvi said that ACME’s Oman Project is the first of a portfolio of green hydrogen-related investments that the group plans to make in India and around the world. Naqvi stated that the group’s vision was to produce 10 million tonnes of green molecules in terms of ammonia green or hydrogen equivalent by 2030-2032.
