We can and are learning so much from animals, even the most unlikely, we’re getting life giving elixirs from the most poisonous of creatures and the latest surprise comes in the shape of the animal that inspired Gotham City’s most famous superhero.

Bats are amazing creatures that have had bad PR because of the pandemic, but let’s pause for thought and look closer. Why didn’t millions of bats die from Covid 19? Not only is it the only mammal that can fly, but did you know bats have an extraordinary ability to avoid infections and evn to avoid cancer and the secret is in their genes.

Bats have long lives, low cancer rates and their ability to tolerate viral infections may stem from unusual features of their highly evolved immune system. Some very clever people at a research facility in NYC think they’ve found their genes that fight cancer and it’s a major step towards giving us a new weapon in our genetic armoury that can help us fight this horrible disease.

We go Down Under now where scientists have found the most unlikely way to make concrete stronger while doing the world a massive favour at the same time.

Say g’day to engineers at RMIT University in Melbourne who’ve found a way to replace sand in concrete with used coffee grounds, which makes it 30% stronger and replaces sand, which is a finite resource. 11 million tons of spent coffee is generated annually around the world. Disposing of organic waste like this poses an environmental challenge because t emits huge amounts of greenhouse gases like methane, which is 21 times worse than CO2 for the climate.

They turned the coffee grounds into Biochar – a magical stuff I’ve raved about here in different contexts, and the biochar is created using a low energy process, making this a triple win. The process is called pyrolyzing and it’s not just coffee grounds that you can use to make this stuff, watch this very interesting space!
